I have been a lawyer for over 20 years, first as a solicitor and now as a barrister and arbitrator.
I specialise in commercial disputes, and maintain a busy practice covering contractual and transactional disputes, corporate insolvencies and restructuring cases, shareholder disputes, personal bankruptcies, and probate and wills disputes. I also maintain an active portfolio in other areas including employment disputes, intellectual property, shipping, personal injuries claims, and professional disciplinary proceedings.
I frequently act in cases requiring an urgent freezing order over bank accounts, often where money has been misappropriated by international syndicates. These freezing orders may be coupled with disclosure orders against the recipients of the stolen monies as well as their bankers. An example was the case of Anello Asset Management LLP v General Trading Credit Carbon (HCA 208/2013), where I acted for a UK plaintiff against a Greek defendant and its Hong Kong bankers. I have also acted for the "other side" -- recipients of stolen monies unwittingly caught up in the fraud. An example was the case of Lesnina H. D.O.O. v Wave Shipping Trade Co Ltd [2022] 2 HKLRD 727 where I successfully set up a bona fide recipient defence for the 8th defendant (who had received part of the misappropriated funds via PRC underground banking system).
Most of my court work is done in the High Court, but I also represent clients before the District Court as well as specialist tribunals like the Trade Marks Registry, the Copyright Tribunal and the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. For example, I represented TVB before the Copyright Tribunal in Television Broadcasts Ltd v Warner Music Hong Kong Ltd & others (CT 2, 3 & 4 of 2009).
I have acted in a number of large liquidation and corporate restructuring cases, including over venerable Hong Kong retail chain operators Tai Lin Radio Service Limited and Hong Kong Optical Company Limited, as well as publicly listed companies like Ocean Grand Holdings Limited, 3D-Gold Jewellery Holdings Limited, FU JI Food and Catering Services Holdings Limited, Starlight International Holdings Limited, and First Mobile Group Holdings Limited.
Apart from representing clients in court, I also act in arbitration proceedings around the world, and I accept appointments to act as an independent arbitrator. I am accredited as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb).
Prior to joining the Bar, I was a litigation solicitor with the Dispute Resolution Group of international law firm Baker & McKenzie, where I handled a large number of complex commercial disputes, insolvency actions, arbitrations, and securities and regulatory investigations.
I am on the Legal Aid Department's panel of barristers for professional negligence cases, contractual disputes, commercial litigation, corporate winding up, and personal bankruptcy actions. I am also on the Department of Justice’s panel of external barristers for civil cases involving the Hong Kong Government.
From 2011-2016, I taught Civil Litigation part-time as a Lecturer (Non-Clinical) with the University of Hong Kong's Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (PCLL) program, and in 2013 I taught its Professional Practice & Management course as well. I am also a contributing author for Companies Law in Hong Kong – Insolvency.
